Gait Analysis
Gait Analysis is the measurement of horses movement in each gait. It allows for monitoring of characterisations of a horses movement throughout its life.
By measuring the number of strides, time and distance of each gait we can identify loss of performance, select for a specific discipline, monitor recovery from injury and measure improved or loss of performance.
Gait analysis can collate a library of each horse's movement from the very early days and can ensure that the horse maximises it's true potential by placing it in the most suitable discipline according to it's natural gait. With regular monitoring we can fend off problems early and monitor for full recovery and maximise perfomance.
We train all our students using the ETB Pegasus System, the most accurate gait measurement data in the Equine market today.
Practical Biomechanics and Gait Analysis
with Dr David Marlin and Dr Rachel Murray
Level I
During this course you will learn the following:
History of studies into horse movement
How do horses move?
What are the feature of equine anatomy that relate to movement?
Techniques for studying movement in horse?
Day I
History of research into how horses move.
Importance of biomechanics - perfomance, injury, lameness and more
Practical anatomy of the horse, particulary the limbs and back
Techniques for studying movement in horses: kinematic, kinetic and other.
Basics of movement SL, SF and speed; the gaits.
Day II
Review of techniques for analysing movement and planning for practical session.
Groups of 2-3 people working together
Two horses, one small one large - Students to discuss and describe how the horses move at walk trot and medium canter in terms of SL, SF and speed in a straight line and on the lunge. Students to predict what you expect to find with respect to size, gaits and straight line versus turning. Equipment provided - Stop watch Measuring wheel.
Muscles in motion
Brain and neurologic component of locomotion
